LEDs have a characteristic curve (the behavior of current to voltage) that makes it difficult to easily supply them with the voltage present in our models. A supply with a constant voltage is not possible because the smallest changes in the voltage or temperature of the LED have a major impact on the current flowing.
The power supply for LEDs to illuminate a model therefore usually includes a series resistor in front of the LED. This is necessary to limit the current of the LED and minimize the effects of voltage changes. However, this does not result in a constant current; a falling voltage (battery becomes empty) also reduces the current and thus the brightness. The series resistor also consumes energy and becomes correspondingly hot.
The LED current regulator solves these problems. It is a switching regulator specifically for the constant current supply of LEDs. The previously used series resistor with all its disadvantages is replaced by this electronics. The LED current regulator provides a constant output current regardless of the input voltage with a very high level of efficiency.
That means:
- significantly fewer losses
- hardly any heating (no cooling of the electronics necessary)
- Smaller battery possible for the same runtime
- constant brightness regardless of battery voltage
- Very simple dimensioning, nothing needs to be adjusted even if the supply voltage changes
The LED current regulator is available in five different current intensities and is selected to match the LEDs used. The current strength should correspond to the rated current strength of the LEDs. In continuous operation, the cooling of the LEDs is of course crucial; if in doubt, a lower current should be selected.
To expand the possibilities, the LED current controller also has a control input and can be controlled directly by appropriate receivers with digital outputs or switching modules. In many cases, no additional electronics are necessary for the lighting.
A digital signal from 3 V to 28 V switches on the LED current controller . Not only control via the receiver or a lighting module is conceivable here, but also any other signal such as, in the simplest case, a switch.
